The government is hoping to address this problem through a 250 million pounds sterling starter homes scheme. This is available to households with a total annual income of up to 42,000 pounds sterling.

Spring is traditionally the busiest time of year for buying and selling houses in the UK, as this is when houses tend to look their best. However, some vendors are still asking too much, failing to realize that the availability of houses for sale is increasing and that the advantage is therefore with buyers. Estate agents believe that low interest rates will continue for the rest of 1998, and there is therefore a strong sense of optimism.
