Writer and literary critic Alfred Kazin began reviewing for the New Republic in 1934, having studied for only one year at the City College of New York. He was a socialist for many years, but never a Marxist. He became literary editor of New Republic in 1942, and at the same time published 'On Native Grounds,' which traces the rise of American realism from the late 19th century to the 1930s. He was linked with many distinguished universities during the post-war period.

K.W. Gransden
Article Abstract:
Literary critic, scholar and poet Karl Gransden gained a double First in Classics at Jesus College, Cambridge, England. He worked as assistant keeper of manuscripts at the British Museum between 1951 and 1957, but also developed his literary interests, including writing poems and reviews. He became literary editor of the Listener, but in 1965 was one of the four founding members of the Dept of English at Warwick University, England.

Roma Gill

Critic and English scholar Roma Gill was born in Keighley, England, in 1934. She studied at New Hall, Cambridge, England, and then at St Hilda's College, Oxford, England. She taught in teacher training colleges before joining Sheffield University, England, in 1963.
