All bull and bravado

Article Abstract:

UK government ministers do not generally see it as their role to promote specific British products. However, the case of concerns over the possible health impact of beef has been an exception. Here, specific views have been expressed on whether people should eat beef or not. In fact, government ministers do not really know whether beef is safe, so they should avoid dictating to ordinary people in this way and should simply leave people to make their own decision.

Labour goes for the jugular

Article Abstract:

The UK's Conservative government is likely to suffer considerable damage to its reputation as a result of its efforts to convince consumers that there is no health risk from eating British beef. Ministers have stressed that they are simply passing on independent scientific advice, thus abandoning their traditional role of influencing public opinion. The Labour party has been able to use this crisis to considerable political advantage.

'Britain is slowly changing hands.' (Conservative party has very little chance of winning the next general election)

Article Abstract:

The recent by-election victory for the Labour party in Staffordshire is not in itself conclusive evidence that the Conservative party is on the way out, but in general terms the Conservatives seem to have little hope of winning the next general election. There is now a strong sense that the UK is shifting towards a change of government, with clear signs that voters are prepared to vote tactically in order to defeat the government.
