All set to invade America

Article Abstract:

Analysts believe that UK utilities are well placed to use emerging opportunities in the US electricity and gas sector to fuel their global ambitions, after having come through ten years of privatisation, regulation, competition and cross-selling electricity and gas supplies, which has led to increased competition in domestic markets. Although to date the US ambitions of UK companies such as PowerGen and Scottish Power have failed to materialise, utilities are keen to strike while the pound is high and US electricity utilities have increased in value as the bid frenzy continues. The cultural and legal similarities between the US and the UK are seen as another attraction for UK companies. US companies, which own eight of the 14 UK regional electricity companies (recs) are still showing interest in the UK market even though cost cutting opportunities have not been as great as originally anticipated. Some analysts believe that the transatlantic process may incorporate the water supply industry in the future, leading to the formation of a group of mega-utilities split between the US and Europe, which could rival international oil companies in terms of global activities and corporate power.
