All together now

Article Abstract:

The English National Ballet's most recent production of 'Swan Lake,' directed by Derek Deane, features a cast of 65 swans, compared with the normal 22. It proved extremely difficult to ensure that all the dancers performed in exactly the same way, as they had all been trained slightly differently. However, Deane was able to draw on his experiences of greatly improving standards at the English National Ballet since he became its artistic director in 1993. There is a much more businesslike approach, and the company has won a number of awards.

Treading on dangerous ground

Article Abstract:

Sir Kenneth MacMillan, the late Royal Ballet choreographer, did not believe that there was any subject which an artist could not handle, according to Lady MacMillan, his widow. His ballets portrayed many difficult subjects, including rape, suicide and murder. One of his works, 'Anastasia,' has now been revived by the Royal Ballet after not having been performed for 18 years. It was widely criticised when it was first performed, and his widow feels that this was simply an excuse to criticise his work as a whole.

Spanish anchorage

Article Abstract:

Tourism has not been allowed to take over the Spanish island of Menorca, even though it is a very popular tourist destination. The island is small, making travel easy, and most people speak very good English. It has no coastal road, and some of the most attractive beaches can therefore only be reached by walking some distance. The main towns of Ciudadela and Mahon are both very attractive, but they should be avoided during the peak tourist season, when they become very crowded.
