Oscars orgy of glamour and trivia

Article Abstract:

The 1999 Oscars were a very glamorous event, even though these awards are largely meaningless. The event was dominated by the film 'Shakespeare in Love,' which won seven awards, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Picture and Best Actress. There was a sense of embarrassment at the decision to give a Lifetime Achievement Award to director Elia Kazan, who betrayed eight of his friends to the House Un-american Activities Committee in 1952.
