An information freeway

Article Abstract:

A considerable number of services offering free Internet access have been established in the UK since 1998. This trend began when Dixons launched Freeserve, which now claims around 1 million users. Almost all these free Internet services are run by well-known telecommunications or Internet companies, including Energis, British Telecommunications and Cable and Wireless. Industry observers believe that companies launching a free Internet service face few risks. Indeed, they may risk losing customers if they do not offer such a service.

Fix it quick, and the bug won't bite

Article Abstract:

The year 2000 computer date change may cause problems for PCs, particularly older ones. It is important to check the PC's documentation, which should indicate if it is year 2000-compliant. If it is not clear whether the PC is year 2000-compliant, it is possible to test the system using a free software check. It is advisable for all PC users to back up critical files, and it may even be worthwhile printing out important information.
