An ordinary road on the front line between hope and despair

Article Abstract:

There will great tension on the Catholic Garvaghy Road in Portadown, Northern Ireland, on Jul 5, 1998, when Orangemen plan to march down the road after their morning service at Drumcree Church. The road's nationalist residents have rejected a request from the UK government to allow the march to go ahead, and Army and Royal Ulster Constabulary officers are now erecting checkpoints. Local people are keen to point out that there is no trouble in this area at other times of year and that there are friendly relations between Catholic and Protestants.

Tina's big idea

Article Abstract:

The time is now right for an influential American magazine, according to former New Yorker editor Tina Brown. She now holds an equity position in multimedia start-up company Talk Media. She regards the magazine of the same name as a cultural search engine, publishing columns, profiles and narratives that can be extended into other genres such as books and films. She believes that conditions are now right for high quality writing to be distributed to a wide audience. Talk Media has a planned launch of 100,000 subscriptions.

Crying 'freedom' from Islington

Article Abstract:

There are many complicated issues associated with human rights, according to Ursula Owen, editor of bi-monthly magazine Index on Censorship. The magazine used to focus on eastern Europe, but has over recent years had to develop a new role. The rest of the world regards the magazine as British, but it seeks to be international. Owen feels that the magazine has a positive impact on the lives of people in the developing world. In particular, these people gain comfort from the fact that they are being written about.
