And so farewell, monstrous icon, 1918-1995
Article Abstract:
The Labour party's defeat in the last general election made many of its key members recognise that Clause IV of the party's constitution, which committed the party to nationalisation, had to be changed, as ordinary people were being alienated by the gap between the party's principles and its stated policies. This has led to extensive ideological debate within the party over recent months, allowing ordinary party members to deal with the issue of how a democratic socialist movement can work with a market economy. The reform of Clause IV will allow the party to move forward with confidence.

A Modern icon comes back from the dead
Article Abstract:
Finnish architect Alvar Aalto designed the Cubist Viipuri Library in 1932, which was thought destroyed, but is still flourishing in 1993. The town of Viipuri was renamed Vyborg in 1945 when it became Russian. The white Modern Movement building has been used as the town library for 32 years. Demolition of the cathedral caused cracking to the library but renovation could not be afforded until after Nikita Khrushchev's reforms. The authorities approached Aalto for copyright permission for restoration. He died in 1976 and a worldwide appeal fund was launched in May 1992 to raise $10 million.

Punk to grunge - stars embrace the icon beyond the edge
Article Abstract:
William Burroughs took a much more commercial approach to his work in later life, particularly under the influence of James Grauerholz, who ran William Burroughs Communications and organized readings and lectures. Burroughs began to cultivate himself as a performer, and he also taught creative writing. He was quickly embraced by punk musicians as someone committed to extremist aesthetics, and was seen as complete embodiment of punk ideology. His name began appearing within the context of punk mutations in the mid- to late-1970s.
