And the poor inherited Blair

Article Abstract:

Christian activists in the UK have found it difficult to decide how they should react to Prime Minister Tony Blair, who attends Mass, is a member of the Christian Socialist Movement and makes many scriptural references in his speeches. Some observers believe that there is a growing tension between those who regard the role of the Church as one of prophetic condemnation and those who support gradual political change. There is particular uncertainty about Blair's decision to request Church agencies and activists to assist in implementing the 'New Deal' welfare programmes.

Take the third way to nirvana

Article Abstract:

It is not necessary to accept Asian cultural standards to benefit from Buddhism, according to Stephen Batchelor, director of Sharpham College for Buddhist Studies and Contemporary Enquiry. He regards Buddhism as a technique for living, rather than a belief system. He feels that the real attraction of Buddhism is the eight-fold path of ethical, moral and spiritual guidelines designed to lead to unlimited happiness. He redefines the core notion of rebirth, rather than rejecting it.
