Article Abstract:

Contralto singer, teacher and opera administrator Anne Wood studied singing privately with Elena Gerhardt, George Parker and Eve de Reussy. She worked for the Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts and for the Ministry of Economic Warfare during the second world war, and in 1948 became an artistic director of the English Opera Group. Also in 1948, she linked with soprano Joan Cross to form the Opera Studio. She became General Manager of Phoenix Opera when it was established in 1965.

Leonie Rysanek

Article Abstract:

Operatic soprano Leonie Rysanek studied at the Vienna Conservatory, making her concert debut in 1948 and her operatic debut in 1949. She came to public attention in 1951, when she sang the role of Sieglinde in 'Die Walkure' at the Bayreuth Festival. She moved to the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, Germany, in 1952 and here developed her strong attachment to the operas of Richard Strauss. She joined the Vienna State Opera in 1954 and made her US debut in 1956.

Gotz Friedrich

Opera director, administrator and teacher Gotz Friedrich was born in Naumburg, Germany, in 1930. He studied at the Weimar Theatre Institute between 1949 and 1953, and then joined the Komische Opera as dramaturge.
