Article Abstract:

Universities are providing foreign language classes for their undergraduates as an extra to their degree studies. York University was inundated with applications for the courses which aim for competent speech for daily use and within students' subject fields. Students appreciate the value of languages in business, the single European market and being able to work in a foreign country. Courses in York are for four hours a week and lead to post-A-level standard. Modular degrees combined with a language are increasing nationwide.

Colleges lose crammer image to retake the market

Article Abstract:

Some tutorial colleges have recently taken on a new image, aiming to attract students other than those doing A-level retakes. They are now offering courses at both GCSE and A-level standard, and some are registered with the Department for Education, allowing them to provide pre-16 education. They have gained a much more positive reputation, and many offer much more flexible combinations of courses and subjects than mainstream schools.

Mixing pleasure with business

Article Abstract:

Language students now tend to have very clear ideas about how much time, money and effort they are prepared to invest, and are carefully selecting the courses which most closely meet their requirements. Students have become more demanding, and colleges and language schools are having to adapt their courses accordingly. Many are now offering courses focusing on areas such as legal, academic, business or financial language.
