Anzacs declare war on the Dirty Digger
Article Abstract:
There has been considerable controversy in Australia about Rupert Murdoch's decision to use military symbols to promote a match between the Australian and New Zealand rugby league teams. The match will take place on Anzac Day, when the war dead of Australia and New Zealand are remembered. This annual event, a public holiday, has traditionally been taken very seriously and has been free from commercialism. For this reason, many people feel that Murdoch's decision is highly inappropriate.

'So many bodies that I could hardly move my boat through the lagoon.' (tidal wave in Papua New Guinea)
Article Abstract:
The northern coast of Papua New Guinea was hit by at least three tidal waves following an earthquake under the sea nearby. The tidal waves killed up to 1,000 people and totally devastated three villages. They swept 2 km inland, leaving up to 5,000 people injured or homeless. It is thought that at least 2,000 people fled into the jungle, and it is not yet known how many of these have survived. Australia is helping to organize an international emergency rescue effort.

Voyage of hope ends in despair for boat people
Article Abstract:
Cambodian, Vietnamese and Chinese boat people who hoped for freedom in Australia are held in detention centres while their applications for asylum are investigated. The Australian Human Rights Commission and the Australian Council of Churches objected. In May 1992 a law was passed to prevent courts releasing asylum-seekers but the High Court found this unconstitutional. Cases challenging unlawful detention and refusal of refugee status begin in Feb 1993.
