Are the church firebombers intent on oppressing India's illiterates?

Article Abstract:

There have been a considerable number of violent attacks by extreme right-wing Hindu groups on the Christian minority in India. This problem is now beginning to attract international attention, but the Indian government does not seem to be able to do anything about it. This is because the attacks are the work of political allies of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's Hindu nationalist Bharitaya Janata Party. Some observers believe that the real target of the attacks is Congress Party Pres Sonia Gandhi, although it is not completely certain that she is a practising Catholic.

The revolution starts at 12 Clifford Road

Article Abstract:

Arthur Scargill's new Socialist Labour party has not yet been officially launched, but is fighting the forthcoming by-election in Hemsworth with Brenda Nixon as its candidate. This has traditionally been an area of strong Labour support, but the Labour party has taken care to send prominent figures there in the pre-election period. Scargill claims that the Labour party has moved away from its socialist principles, and his message may gain some support in an area for which the mainstream Labour party has little to offer.

The conferment of a knighthood by Prince Charles on science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke has been postponed following allegations in the Sunday Mirror newspaper that Clarke is a self-confessed paedophile. Clarke denies the allegations, but postponed the ceremony in order not to cause embarrassment to Prince Charles. The allegations have greatly shocked many people in Sri Lanka, where Clarke lives and where he is extremely influential.
