It's Darwin's theory of evolution turned automotive: survival of the fittest ... and few European-based manufacturers now make a profit
Article Abstract:
European car manufacturers remain inefficient, and few are making a profit. This is encouraging them to cut costs, even to the point of moving to less expensive locations. Many are now establishing operations in eastern Europe, and this is in turn putting pressure on older facilities in western Europe where costs are higher. It is likely that there will be extensive factory closures or reorganisation in western Europe. Attention will also be given to reducing over-engineering in some areas.

Small and perfectly formed
Article Abstract:
The small car is beginning to enjoy a revival in popularity, partly because of growing traffic congestion problems and partly because of the rise in the number of households owning two or three cars. Small cars also offer the advantage of lower fuel costs. It is increasingly common for small cars to be selected on the basis of their desirability, rather than because they are inexpensive.
