Article Abstract:

The music of Jean-Baptiste Lully, who composed stage works for Louis XIV, is young, according to early music expert William Christie, who has been a key driving force behind the modern revival of Lully's music. He is currently working on 'Thesee,' which combines dramatic music, comic diversion and Baroque spectacle, with a company of students taken from sources including the conservatoires in Paris, France, and London, England. He believes that audiences will greatly appreciate hearing this work performed by young people.

Go on, rock that boat

Article Abstract:

The very strong messages which the greatest composers delivered can still be understood today, according to conductor William Christie. He has taken an unusual approach in focusing on French Baroque opera, which has not been performed very frequently in recent times. Most recently, he has been working on Rameau's 'Les Fetes d'Hebe,' an opera-ballet written in 1739, with Les Arts Florissants, his Paris-based ensemble. His interpretations are original and spontaneous, but are by no means reckless.

Confessions of a Francophile

Article Abstract:

Conductor William Christie recalls that he developed an interest in French Baroque music at an early age. He emphasizes that he has always been very attracted to French culture, and feels that it was inevitable that he would come to Europe from his native US. He feels that there is growing confidence among period-instrument performers in France and that these performers are now starting to influence modern approaches to playing.
