Sotheby's announced a $5.2 million - 2.93 million pounds sterling - loss in the 1st qtr 1991 so as well as redundancies and closing the Chester branch, they opened the Arcade Gallery in the London basement to attract purchasers with modest means. Arcade Sales have affordable antiques at 400-1,200 pounds sterling. There are 10,000 lots a year. The first sale sold 336 lots and left 359 unsold. The Green Shoots by Hockney, Miro and Matisse

Article Abstract:

The art market is improving at the end of 1992. A Sotheby's sale in December made better prices than its June sale, and more prints were bought which had been unwanted in June. Ten Warhol prints of Marilyn Monroe fetched 115,000 pounds sterling. Lower-priced prints also sold near their upper estimates. The modern and contemporary print market is reviving. Matisse has become exceptionally popular in New York. His 'Danseuse' sold at 3,300 pounds sterling against an estimated 2-2,500 pounds sterling.

From the dawn of time, a bargain

Article Abstract:

There are vast numbers of antiquities in circulation in the UK, and they can be purchased at very low prices. They remain inexpensive because around 100,000 small artefacts, such as pots, brooches and pins, are dug up every year by developers or by people using metal detectors. A plain Roman domestic pottery bowl, for example, can cost as little as 20 pounds sterling, while a simple bottle costs 50 pounds sterling.
