Barings man eyes fresh fields

Article Abstract:

New banking venture Caspian is set to become the world's leading investment bank for emerging markets by the end of the 1990s, according to founder Christopher Heath, a former Barings executive. It aims to provide investment banking services covering areas including asset management, securities and capital markets, and has been able to raise 50 million pounds sterling in the City. Heath has already gained a strong reputation for his work in transforming Barings into a full scale investment house.

It is investing heavily in this sector, and aims to totally change its profile in the City of London. Middleton is recruiting people for the new investment banking operation, and is focusing on establishing a strong management culture.

One of the main tasks of Marcel Ospel, who is set to become chief executive of investment bank Warburg following its purchase by Swiss Bank Corp, will be to ensure that key employees do not leave. Warburg staff have been demoralised over recent months, and a number have already taken other employment. They are now welcome to return, according to Ospel.
