Battles without blood

Article Abstract:

The Court of Appeal may recommend action by doctors when patients such as Jehovah's Witnesses refuse blood transfusions. Liaison committees have been established by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society to defuse tense situations. Committee members hold medical articles on alternative treatments. The Jehovah's Witness headquarters keeps a register of sympathetic surgeons. Erythropoietin (EPO), a hormone which encourages extra production of red blood cells, enables operations without blood transfusion.

A skiver may be rational, not criminal

Article Abstract:

Education Welfare Officers have to sell education when they visit truants' homes. A University of North London survey of truancy does not link truancy with crime, although Merseyside Police surveys do. A National Foundation of Educational Research study showed that one in four 13-year-olds played truant. Schools must publish attendance figures from Sep 1993, but some worry that these might be favourably altered. Some schools consider authorised absences the same as attendance.

Cannabis: why doctors want it to be legal

Article Abstract:

Cannabis relieves pain, eases nausea and restores appetitie. It is useful for patients suffering from cancer, Aids and MS. Surgeon General of the US from Jun 1993 Joycelyn Elders said she would approve its medical use. It was used by European doctors in the 19th century. As cannabis is a natural substance it cannot be patented. Individual cannabinoids have been manufactured synthetically.
