Between heaven and a headache

Article Abstract:

The Serpentine Gallery in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition entitled 'Bridget Riley: Paintings from the 1960s & 70s.' These works are certainly of their time, but they do not appear at all dated. They feature black and white squares and spots, and some are actually painful to look at. The South London Art Gallery in London, England, is staging an exhibition of the work of Sean Scully. Like Riley's, these works emphasize structure, order and method. However, their effect is very different from that of Riley's works.

What a work of art is man

Article Abstract:

The South London Gallery in London, England, is exhibiting 12 pieces by artist Marc Quinn. These are mainly linked with body-morphing, with moulds of a body being used to create sculptures. The piece 'Raspberry Nervous Breakdown' shows a head on a pole dissolving in long red and white strands, while in 'Stripped' an upright naked body is immersed in its own dribbling meltdown. The only non-body work is 'Eternal Spring,' in which vases of sunflowers are preserved in frozen silicon.

Here's one in your eye

Article Abstract:

The Abbot Hall Art Gallery in Kendal, England, is currently exhibiting paintings by Bridget Riley from the period 1961 to 1998. Her early paintings were based around optical effects, but her later works show greater richness and subtlety. Highlights of the exhibition include a pair of prints entitled 'Ra 2' and 'Silvered 2.' These have the same number of stripes of the same range of colours, but the stripes are ordered differently to show that ordering is everything.
