Beware of fibs in Euro-sceptic clothing

Article Abstract:

Recent highly exaggerated claims that membership of the European Union adds 20 pounds sterling to the weekly expenditure on food of the average UK household are an example of how those opposed to UK membership of the European Union can use statistics in a misleading way. Euro-sceptics have been engaged in a fierce propaganda war over recent years, but in some cases the statistics they use have no basis of truth at all. There have also been cases of supporters of the European Union presenting misleading economic and political arguments.

Europe: how the East was lost

Article Abstract:

Concerns about the direction of European Union policy are now being expressed even by those who are basically in favour of the European Union. Key issues include the negative attitude of the UK, which is now beginning to cause open irritation in continental Europe. There is likely to be no more patience with the UK even if the Labour party wins the next general election. There is also concern that economic and monetary union will create more barriers within Europe than it will break down.

BSE: big chance for Brussels

Article Abstract:

The European Union should take advantage of the current crisis over British beef to emphasise to Britons, who are often critical of the European Union, that membership actually brings benefits. It could assist by undertaking a strict independent investigation of the latest scientific information from the UK government. It may then be able to lift the embargo on British beef, thus restoring domestic and international confidence.
