Big-hitters lock horns in classic contest

Article Abstract:

The race for the Senate is particularly significant in the state of Massachusetts, where both candidates are highly education, extremely wealthy and well connected. The Democratic candidate is John Forbes Kerry, a junior senator since 1984, while the Republican candidate is William Floyd Weld, who has been governor of Massachusetts for two terms. Kerry appears rather formal and reserved, while Weld is a populist. However, both embody philosophies which may greatly influence their parties in the 21st century.

The oldest mover in town

Article Abstract:

Senator Strom Thurmond of Edgefield, South Carolina, is currently seeking a eighth six-year term in the US Senate at the age of 93. He is expected to easily defeat his rival, Harold Worley, despite his age. However, he will face Elliot Close, a wealthy young democrat, at the general election in Nov 1996, and this could cause him more problems. If he is successful then, he will become the longest serving senator ever in Mar 1997.
