Bikes overtake cars in sales but not in safety

Article Abstract:

The Bicycle Association estimates high numbers of bike purchases between 1980 and 1992 and about 6 million people cycle regularly. The Department of Transport policy is for safety and bicycle accidents are numerous. Cycling is good exercise but safe routes for cyclists are rare. London is extremely poor in provision for cyclists yet needs to reduce its car traffic drastically. The London Cycling Campaign plans a 1,000 mile network of cycle routes. Charity rides and cycling for leisure are popular. Nottingham, England has an 18-mile cycling network but accident statistics have not improved. The international event, Velo City, will be held in Nottingham in 1993.

Recovery measured in small bytes

Article Abstract:

UK recruitment agencies for temporary computer staff in professions such as artwork and design experience an increase in demand as the recession lifts in 1993. Companies prefer to use freelance or contract staff as they can purchase specific skills when required, but avoid holiday pay, sick pay and National Insurance contributions. Some agencies think employers would be encouraged to employ part-timers if National Insurance payments were lowered for those staff. Computers have decreased the numbers of employees needed, so shorter working weeks would be sensible.

Teleworkers are home and dry

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly common for IT specialists in the UK to choose to work from home, rather than from an office. They are seeking strong demand for their skills, and find that the high intellectual content of their work makes it perfectly suited to the home environment. Working from home improves the quality of their life, as they are in familiar surroundings and avoid lengthy journeys.
