Bill Clinton was angry. His White House advisers were hopping mad

Article Abstract:

The US was initially very triumphant when it attacked an alleged chemical weapons plant in Khartoum, Sudan, and an alleged terrorist training camp in Afghanistan in retaliation for the bombing of US embassies in Africa. However, it soon emerged that the plant in Khartoum was actually only a harmless pharmaceuticals facility, owned privately by Saudi banker Salah Idris, not by the secretive Military-Industrial Complex. Idris used his extensive network of contacts to hit back against the US government. The administration eventually conceded that it could not bring a viable court case against Idris, but it continued to attack him.

Delors restates faith in road to federalism

Article Abstract:

Jacques Delors, the departing president of the European Commission, has reaffirmed his belief in the need for a federal Europe, a single currency and a common defence. However, his farewell speech lacked much of the strong rhetoric which has characterised Delors' decade as president, and he admitted that progress towards European integration has been disappointing. He called on Europe to remain focused on the federal approach as the only way of ensuring the defence of national personalities and regional diversity.

This could be the beginning of a beautiful affair - with the USA

Article Abstract:

The US appears to be extremely prosperous and confident. However, there are still serious underlying difficulties. Black Americans remain excluded from many areas of society, and for this reason the country's future seems uncertain. It is now time to consider how economic prosperity can contribute to social healing and regeneration. It is also important to respect the fact that the US sets very high targets for itself and to accept that this will form a strong basis for improvement.
