Birth of a prof

Article Abstract:

Women should believe that they can achieve whatever they want, regardless of their sex, according to Lesley Regan, head of obstetrics and gynaecology at the Imperial College School of Medicine at St Mary's hospital in London, England. She was the first woman in England to be appointed as a professor and head of department of obstetrics and gynaecology. She believes that she now has a valuable opportunity to act as a role model for female medical students and junior women doctors, encouraging them to stay in the medical profession and in particular in obstetrics and gynaecology.

There's a vendetta against me, says doctor

Article Abstract:

Gynaegologist Graham Barker, who has received negative publicity following revelations that more than 1,000 of his patients are being recalled following concerns about his handling of their treatment after abnormal cervical smear test results, denies that he is an incompetent doctor. He has been criticized for not cutting sufficiently deeply when removing cancer cells from the neck of the womb using the loop biopsy technique. He believes that St George's hospital Trust has launched a vendetta against him.

Trapped in the ice at 19,000ft, soldiers can only wait and pray

Article Abstract:

Two members of a six-man team from the Princess of Wales Royal Regiment and the Army Physical Training Corps have become trapped on the icy slopes of Mount McKinley in Alaska. The team, which was aiming for the 20,032 ft peak, got into difficulties after falling down an ice chute known to climbers as the Orient Express. Rescuers are now hoping that the weather will improve sufficiently to allow a special Lama helicopter to rescue the two stranded men.
