Blair backs Britain to run the show

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has emphasized the positive contribution being made by British civil servants working for European institutions. This comes after many years in which these officials became accustomed to working independently of the UK government, which was often hostile to the European Commission. They welcome the fact that Blair is now acknowledging their contribution, but are also concerned that they may be expected to give more attention to their national loyalties.

Brussels bets on Blair win to seal reform deal

Article Abstract:

European Union heads of government seem to have abandoned efforts to negotiate with the UK's Conservative government on the future of Europe. They are now anticipating a victory by the Labour party in the forthcoming general election, and are planning to hold a special summit with Labour party leader Tony Blair on May 23 1997. At this summit, they would discuss a new European constitution, and hope to have a commitment from Blair as soon as possible.

Europe's fight against crime falls victim to the beef war

Article Abstract:

Europol, the police intelligence agency which is being developed for Europe, is being badly affected by the UK's decision to disrupt European Union business. It has no remit to operate effectively until a specific legal convention is ratified, but the UK is preventing this from happening. In its current position, it also cannot keep personal computerised records on criminals and is subject to excessive bureaucracy.
