Blair can dump unions, but not the poor

Article Abstract:

The Labour party would not be damaged by severing its traditional links with the trade unions, as the unions no longer account for a large proportion of the party's funding and trade unionists now tend to speak as individuals rather than as members of a particular group. However, the Labour party must still ensure that it retains the support of the ordinary working class people who have partly relied on the trade union movement to represent their interests. It would not be a strong force for change once in government if it did not have the support of these people.

Election that casts a poor shadow

Article Abstract:

Aspiring Labour politicians campaign vigorously in the run-up to elections to the Parliamentary Committee of the Labour party, or the shadow cabinet. They work very hard to gain the support of their colleagues, often over many months. However, the resulting shadow cabinet is often made up of those who have campaigned most successfully, not those who are best suited to the job. This causes considerable damage to the Labour party, which should consider abandoning the idea of a shadow cabinet altogether.

What Prospect of serious success?

Article Abstract:

Some observers believe that the monthly political magazine 'Prospect,' a new venture by David Goodhart, currently on leave from the 'Financial Times,' will not be successful because people are no longer interest in serious political publications. However, there have been cases in the past of publications which were expected to fail actually being very successful, and this could happen again. It will sell if it really meets people's needs, as there is still a willingness to try new publications.
