Blair gives hope for something different

Article Abstract:

Recent speeches by shadow chancellor Gordon Brown and Labour party leader Tony Blair have given an insight into the economic policies of a future Labour government. The most important issues which have emerged are labour market flexibility, dealig with long-term unemployment and long-termism in finance and industry. Some observers are pointing out that certain elements of the Labour party's economic policies are very close to those of chancellor Kenneth Clarke. It certainly seems likely that the current downward trend in public spending as a percentage of GDP would continue under a Labour government.

How much will Labour tax you?

Article Abstract:

There have been a number of very significant changes in the world economy since the UK Labour party was last in power in 1979, and the party has therefore had to reassess its policies on taxation, spending and borrowing. No firm commitments are likely to made until an election campaign actually begins. However, shadow chancellor Gordon Brown has already said that a Labour government would only borrow for investment, not for consumption, and that the ratio of public debt will be stable.

The world waits to see if Blair can tame the market

Article Abstract:

There is considerable international interest in the economic policies which UK Labour party leader Tony Blair may pursue if his party wins the forthcoming general election. The UK is regarded as a model of low unemployment by many countries, and its economic development is therefore very significant. There is particular interest in the possibility of a non-US model for the market economy, one which will combine economic efficiency with a large element of social justice.
