Blair tells Chirac Labour is party of Europe

Article Abstract:

UK Labour party leader Tony Blair used a recent visit to Paris, France, to emphasise that his party is strongly in favour of the European Union, in sharp contrast to the UK Conservative party. He stated that Labour would take a pro-European approach in the run-up to the general election, and criticised the way in the which the present UK government has been responsible for strained relations with other European Union countries. However, he also stated that it was important to protect British interests if they appear to be under threat.

The stifling of British democracy

Article Abstract:

The Commons Select Committee on European Legislation, which exists to check all planned European legislation on behalf of the House of Commons, is planning to boycott all European legislative proposals for which there is no official text in English. This follows growing concern about problems relating to applying checks of British democracy to European legislation. With this move, the House of Commons will come into open conflict with government ministers over relations with Europe, which are already a very sensitive issue.

Grandees issue grave warning on Europe

Article Abstract:

The UK Conservative party must not be allow to sink into a xenophobic rejection of increased European cooperation, according to some of its senior figures. They feel that the UK only has a viable future as part of an interdependent Europe, and that the European Union must be regarded as an opportunity, rather than a threat. The UK should strive to play a leading role, rather than shutting itself off from other countries.
