Blair: we must make our nation proud

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister Tony Blair stated in his speech to the Labour party's 1997 annual conference that the UK can and should be the best country in the world in which to live. He expressed a wish to make Britons proud of having elected a Labour government, and also stressed the importance of not becoming complacent. He pointed out that the Labour party has already begun to meet its pre-election commitments, having signed the social chapter and made additional funds available for hospital and schools.

Blair: It's a con trick, but this time no one will be fooled

Article Abstract:

The UK government's 1996 Budget does no more than make empty promises, according to Labour party leader Tony Blair. He claimed that taxes will be higher at the next general election than at the last, and highlighted that the Conservative party has made 22 tax rises. He pointed out that previous Conservative chancellors had failed to keep their promises, and claimed that ordinary voters are no longer naive enough to be taken in by apparent benefits.

Blair offers vision of a new young Britain

He emphasised that the Labour party is the party of the people, and that his most important aim is to change the country, not the party.
