Blind bard sees all

Article Abstract:

Geoffrey Hill is probably the best living poet, according to poet John Heath-Stubbs. He likes Seamus Heaney as a person, but feels that his poetry is derivative. He is not opposed to performance poets on principle, but feels that they produce a lot of poor quality work. He feels that his blindness may have stimulated his visual imagination in a strange kind of way. He believes that the role of poets is to keep the visionary potentiality of man alive.

Romantics start here

Article Abstract:

The collection of poems entitled 'The Lyrical Ballads,' published anonymously in 1798 by William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, played a very significant role in the development of British Romanticism. In particular, it helped to make it acceptable to write with great passion and simplicity about the human heart. It is characterized by a focus on the individual human response to nature and by a total lack of artificiality in its language.

Tears and fury: the Ginsberg beat goes on

Article Abstract:

Friends of poet Allan Ginsberg, who died in May 1997, staged an event celebrating his life and work at St James's Church in Piccadilly, London, England. The event, compered by Michael Horowitz, included contributions from Jelly Roll Morton's Red Hot Peppers, Adrian Mitchell, Philip Glass, Anne Waldman and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. There were some very poignant moments, but there was also a sense that death had finally caught up with Ginsberg.
