Breakthrough at the breaker's

Article Abstract:

Traditional scrapyards are being superseded by car dismantling and recycling plants. Bolney Motors, West Sussex has such efficient facilities that hardly any wasteful scrap remains. EC legislation on clean disposal by car manufacturers is expected by 1995. Bolney Motors can recycle 2,500 BMWs a year. Scrapped cars are drained of all toxic liquids and stripped of parts. The oil fuels Bolney's heating. The shell of the car is returned to the steel mill. The stripped parts are re-used or recycled, scrapped or burnt as fuel.

Will the joystick take the joy out of driving?

Article Abstract:

Saab has researched intelligent steering systems and produced an experimental 9000 automatic with a central joystick instead of a steering wheel. This is a project in the pan-Europe Prometheus (Programme for European Traffic with Highest Efficiency and Unprecedented Safety) programme. The absence of the steering wheel and column lessens the chance of chest and facial injuries. It leaves more room on the fascia for information.

Softly, softly. You'll never hear them coming

Article Abstract:

Ford has constructed 103 Ecostar electric vehicles for real-life trials, and one is being tested by Hampshire Constabulary. The Ecostar is extremely easy to drive, is very quiet and can reach 30mph from a standstill more quickly than a comparable petrol car. It has a range of around 100 miles, and running costs are competitive.
