Can Trimble find the courage to take a big risk for peace?

Article Abstract:

Ulster Unionist Party leader David Trimble seems to have lost confidence that he can bring about a peace deal in Northern Ireland and survive. This has led to a year of delay which has almost destroyed the peace process. The delay has allowed opponents of the peace process to become more powerful, while Loyalist support for a peace deal has been diminishing. If Trimble is unwilling to take a risk for peace, then it will be necessary to make a direct appeal to the many Unionists who wish to see peace in the 21st century.

How a bad day for Trimble turned into a black day for Ulster

Article Abstract:

Confusion about reactions within the Ulster Unionist party to the republican position on decommissioning has created an impression of a party which could be on the brink of disarray. Party leader David Trimble agreed to take the package he constructed with Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams, which includes formal statements of assurance from both Sinn Fein and the IRA, to his assembly members, but it is unclear exactly how these members reacted. This has created uncertainty about the peace process as a whole.

Trimble told to 'take risk' on arms deal

Article Abstract:

Ulster Unionist leader David Trimble believes that the Northern Ireland Bill, which contains stricter guarantees of disarmament by the IRA, means that democratic parties will be punished for the failure by paramilitaries to decommission. This view is also shared by the UK Conservative party. In contrast, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Mo Mowlam has stated that this Bill represents a good opportunity to bring about genuine peace in Northern Ireland.
