Can peace survive such sabotage?

Article Abstract:

Recent newspaper reports which claimed that the British government would impose peace arrangements on Northern Ireland have caused great fear among Ulster Unionists and have therefore placed the peace process in danger of collapse. However, the government would be extremely unlikely to take such steps, as it depends on the support of the Ulster Unionists. Unionist leaders are determined to retain their power of veto over political change, and are therefore very alarmed by the prospect of a North-South Irish authority determining policy for the whole of the country.

Scarlet, Orange and very smart

Article Abstract:

There have been mixed reactions to the election of David Trimble as leader of the Ulster Unionist party. He is certainly outstanding among Unionist MPs, and has gained a reputation for being an extreme hardliner. His election is likely to bring about many changes in Unionist politics. There will be no reunion with the Democratic Unionist Party in the short term, but it is likely that there will be a Unionist pact between Trimble, Peter Robinson of the Democratic Unionist Party and North Down MP Robert McCartney.

Blair's big chance of power ...but not yet

Article Abstract:

It is unlikely that an immediate general election will be held if the Ulster Unionists carry out their threat to withdraw support for the Conservative government. However, the situation is becoming increasingly unstable, and this may be to the advantage of Tony Blair. The government will face a very difficult year in which its authority will be constantly diminished, and it may be that the Labour party will eventually be able to set an election date to suit its own purposes.
