Car dealers struggle to match prices in other EC countries

Article Abstract:

The European Commission is planning legal proceedings against car manufacturers who impede imports through waiting lists. Quarterly price lists comparing prices in all European countries will be required. The Citroen AX as an example, called Debut in Britain and Hit in Belgium, has a price differential of 37% between lowest and highest cost in various European countries. Existing rules state that prices should not vary by more than 12% in a year or 18% at any one time. Some extras are optional in some countries but standard in others. A Monopolies Commission report in Feb 1992 studied car pricing.

Car dealers drive a hard bargain for 'K' day

Article Abstract:

Annual new-registration sales promotions promote low prices, but in August 1991 sales were only 367,646, leading to unemployment in car-plants and showroom closures. August 1992 produced over 200,000 sales of 'K' registration cars, a 5% increase on 1991. About 1/4 of annual sales are made in August. Higher prices are charged in 1992 but discounts are common. Tax is worked out according to the list price. Factory-fitted extras and different models make price comparison difficult.

Power struggle sees switch away from oil

Article Abstract:

Gas production in Britain may double by 1998/99 and new power stations will be gas-fired. A pipeline may be built to connect Britain with continental gas grids. Oil companies experienced cash-flow problems through the installation of new safety equipment and low production. New North Sea projects expect to cost about 2.75 pounds sterling per barrel. Shell's Brent field will eventually produce more gas than oil.
