Casualties of the class war

Article Abstract:

The UK government is placing strong emphasis on social mobility, presenting a vision of large numbers of working class people who are very ambitious. In fact, there are considerable challenges associated with leaving behind working class origins. Prime Minister Tony Blair has no personal experience of changing social classes, so he is not in a position to know what a difficult experience this can be. Young people who are very ambitious often find that this alienates them from their parents. They cast off one value system, but do not fully take on another.

Yes, it is awful, but what are you doing about it?

Article Abstract:

The Channel 4 documentary series 'Staying Lost,' which shows 18 months in the lives of two children living on the streets, was undoubtedly made with good intentions. Its content is clearly within the boundaries of public interest, but there is no guarantee that it will actually change anything about the circumstances of children living on the streets. This is the reality against which the possible danger to the children filmed must be balanced.
