Catholic martyr still a thorn in Pakistan's side

Article Abstract:

Leading Pakistani Catholic bishop Dr John Joseph committed suicide to put pressure on the government to repeal section 295(C) of the Pakistan Penal Code, under which anyone who defiles the sacred name of the Holy Prophet Muhammad is liable to be punished with death or life imprisonment. Muslim fanatics have since 1990 murdered five people either accused or convicted under this law. Joseph had gained a strong reputation as a campaigning bishop, and in 1992 went on hunger strike to persuade the government to drop plans to include religious affiliation on identity cards.

'The sea wall is collapsing all around us tonight.' (UK Conservative party faces severe defeat in general election)(Election '97)

Article Abstract:

The heavy defeat suffered by the UK Conservative party in the recent general election proved wrong those members of the party who continued to claim right until the end of the campaign that it was the natural party of government. The defeat was much worse than had been expected, and has caused great shock within the Conservative party. Many seats which the party has held for a very long time were lost, especially in the Home Counties, and a number of prominent Conservatives were defeated.

A world that still washes whiter

Article Abstract:

Advertising in the UK still does not reflect the fact that society is becoming increasingly multicultural and ethnically diverse. Advertisements for most consumer products feature only white people, giving a very distorted image of society. Advertising agencies claim to be pioneers, but have failed to realise that blacks and Asians represent a significant consumer group.
