Chain store sector set for mergers

Article Abstract:

According to a report from Verdict, the retail consultants, the department store sector could be heading for a period of takeover and merger activity. The joining of smaller department store players would help create stronger and therefore stronger stores, able to compete with the bigger companies such as Marks & Spencer (M&S). Some of he larger and more dominant department stores are however set to continue applying pressure to the smaller companies as they continue to expand. M&S is planning to add a further 2mn square feet of space between 1998-2000, while Debenhams is also planning to expand quickly. Allders, House of Fraser, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols are also planning expansions. Possible smaller mergers could include Beales, TJ Hughes, Bentalls and Upton & Southern.
