China's greatest ambition may prove her greatest folly

Article Abstract:

China is to divert the course of the Yangtze river as part of the construction of the Three Gorges Dam. There has been criticism of the 18,200-megawatt hydroelectric scheme from people who feel that it will create significant environmental, economic and social difficulties, but the Chinese government has hailed the project as a sign that China is becoming a global power. It remains uncertain whether the dam will lead to a significant reduction in the number of deaths related to the annual flooding in the lower reaches of the Yangtze river.
