Clinton pulls out the stops to turn the US green

Article Abstract:

The US has come under strong pressure since the Rio Earth summit in 1992 to take action to reduce emissions of carbon gases which are known to cause environmental damage. It has so far managed to avoid doing so, but it seems likely that President Bill Clinton may only be able to gain a little extra time before the international pressure to take action becomes too great. He has stated publicly that he accepts the need to reduce global warming, but is facing opposition from groups and individuals concerned about the possibility of US gasoline and car prices rising to European levels.

... While in America, the hungry poor swell queues for charity food

Article Abstract:

There are mixed views in the US about whether welfare reform has been entirely beneficial. It has certainly reduced the number of people claiming benefits, but could also be having negative consequences. Charities report a strong rise in demand for their services, with a survey of 29 cities indicating that requests for emergency food aid rose by an average of 16% in the year to Jun 1997. Charities are having to support both people whose food stamps and benefits have been cut and people who are working but earning only very low wages.
