Commission for review of councils under fire

Article Abstract:

Sir John Banham heads the Local Government Commission, which is likely to recommend unitary authorities and historic counties. The desired outcome has not been delineated by the government and no timetable has been set. A maximum of 15 commissioners will be appointed in May and June and work will commence in July. The new structure should provide effective local government and reflect identifiable communities. Voting patterns show that people understand single-tier authorities better.

How did Sean Harper die?

Article Abstract:

A recent inquest into the death of 20-year-old student Sean Harper, whose body was found at the bottom of an 80 ft ventilation shaft after a Christmas party, recorded an open verdict. However, the coroner criticised some people at the University of London Royal Naval Unit party for not revealing all the details about what actually happened at the party, and a forthcoming secret Royal Naval inquiry into the incident may unearth new evidence.

Are weapons the solution to war in Bosnia?

Article Abstract:

A cross-section of the British public were interviewed for their opinion on arming the Bosnian Muslims after ex-prime minister Baroness Thatcher stated that they should be armed to defend themselves. Most people felt the West should be intervening in some way, but many opposed supplying arms. Some felt Baroness Thatcher had no authority to make such proposals.
