Communist ideologues waiting in the wings for handover

Article Abstract:

The Chinese Communist party is likely to step up activity in Hong Kong after the colony reverts to Chinese sovereignty, despite official statements to the contrary. It has been present in Hong Kong for around 50 years, although it has kept a very low profile. Its work there is centred around the New China News Agency, which acts as China's embassy in Hong Kong, as a news agency, and as the centre of the Hong Kong and Macau Work Committee. It is a central point for controlling a network of pro-Chinese publications.

Question marks hanging over the future

Article Abstract:

The UK will retain links with Hong Kong when the colony is transferred to Chinese sovereignty on Jul 01, 1997, but all royal insignia will be dropped and the British armed forces will withdraw completely. Britons will still be permitted to enter Hong Kong without a visas, but will not be able to work or study there unless they obtain a special permit. Freedom of speech and of the media is theoretically guaranteed under the Basic Law, but China will not allow any criticism of its government.

Tycoon Tung takes over the helm

Article Abstract:

There are mixed views about whether new Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa will bow to the wishes of Chinese leaders. Most ordinary people in Hong Kong believe that he will do so, but this is denied by legislator Allen Lee, who is a close friend. Lee claims that Tung has a very independent spirit. It appears that Tung shares the views of the Chinese leadership so closely that there will be no question about whether he will follow them.
