Consumer shopping

Article Abstract:

The leading grocery store in the U.K. is Tesco with an 18% share, followed by J. Sainsbury with 16% and Asda with 12%. The discount stores, such as Lo-Cost and Netto, have a combined 3% share of main grocery shopping. Shopper mobility has not changed much, with most shoppers travelling between one and two miles to do their major grocery shop. More than 75% of families spend over 45 pounds sterling a week on food, with childless people spending less. An analysis of consumer grocery shopping patterns is presented.

Consumer expenditure

Article Abstract:

Total food sales in the U.K. have grown modestly in the first half of the 1990s, with intense competition keeping prices low, which, together with a lack of consumer confidence, has restrained value growth. High performing sectors include snacks, ethnic foods, confectionery and ready meals. Ready meal sales are estimated to have risen 28% in real terms between 1990 and 1995. Fruit and vegetable sales for 1995 are estimated at 7.31 billion pounds sterling, against 6.05 billion pounds sterling in 1990.
