Corruption, privilege and reward

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister John Major has announced there is to be a reform of the Honours List but it is thought this will be slight and will not remove the injustices inherent in the system. By far the most important part of the system is the ability of the prime minister of the day to make peers. Almost 900 people have been sent by the last 10 prime ministers into parliament via the Lords compared with the whole of the electorate of the UK being able to elect only 651 representatives. Such representation in the Lords makes much easier the passage of contentious legislation.

When sorry is the right word

Article Abstract:

Many observers have expressed cynicism about the Queen's decision to apologise for the theft by the UK of Maori land, as they cannot see the point of apologising for something which happened many years ago and which may not in any case have been responsible for the Maori's present condition. However, apologising can only have a positive outcome, even if it is only a symbolic act. The Queen cannot be seen as responsible for what happened in the past, but there is no harm in bringing it to public attention.
