Costs of fixing mortgages

Article Abstract:

With the possibility of increasing interest rates after the UK election people have been looking at transferring their variable rate mortgages to fixed-rate. Andrew James of financial advisers Hill Martin said that he always drew the attention of his clients to the gamble element of fixed rates, and he never recommended them very strongly.

Life insurers set to cut bonuses

Article Abstract:

Life insurance companies are likely to start reducing their bonuses on with-profits policies in 1995 as a result of poor stock market returns in 1994 and the replacement of strong performance years in the 1970s and 1980s by 1995 in the rolling calculations. General Accident Life, for example, has already cut the total payout on a 10-year with-profits endowment by just over 6%, and similar moves are expected by Commercial Union and Tunbridge Wells Equitable.
