Countdown to a tanker disaster

Article Abstract:

The Japanese-built tanker Braer which was wrecked in the Shetland Isles in Jan 1993 had loose steel pipes which probably damaged air vents, letting water into the fuel. The Connecticut headquarters of operators B & H Ship Management issued information on the tanker's problems. The boiler would not re-ignite and the engineers followed their troubleshooting procedures but water kept re-appearing at the bottom of the settling tank. The main engine and the diesel generators failed and could not be re-started.

Save the world (and pass the fags)

Article Abstract:

Greenpeace campaigners are extremely committed to the organisation's activities, and are prepared to endure considerable hardship. They are often seen as misguided extremists, but this is not really the case at all. Greenpeace is very well funded and organised, and campaigners are either full-time Greenpeace employees or on paid contracts. They are often talented and highly qualified, and their activities are very well organised.

Hole in ozone threatens UK

Article Abstract:

Measurements taken recently at Lerwick in Shetland and at Camborne in Cornwall indicate that the ozone layer over the UK is in a poor condition. This goes against forecasts by scientists that the ozone layer would start to recover after having been deteriorating for several decades. It now seems possible that the ozone layer will continue to thin, especially if there are more very cold winters at high altitude.
