County set decamps to Hungarian plain

Article Abstract:

German, Scandinavian and Austrian farmers have for some time been aware of the potential advantages of running farms in central and eastern Europe, where there are large plots available, the soil is fertile and running costs are very low. This region is now also beginning to attract farmers from the UK. The best farmland has already been taken, but there is still strong interest from UK farmers in attending agricultural 'study tours' in the region. There can be considerable practical problems to overcome, but farming in central and eastern Europe may prove a wise long-term move.

No turning back from dawn of new Slovakia

Article Abstract:

Most Slovaks are pessimistic about independence. Tourism is unlikely in Bratislava because the huge Petrzalka housing estate and the Slovnaft oil refinery spoil the view of the River Danube and Austria. Industry causes pollution and the old-fashioned factories produce unwanted goods. Prime Minister Vladimir Meciar may evolve a more authoritarian rule. The people fear he will aggravate tension beween Slovaks and the 600,000 Hungarian minority. He will stop the privatisation programme in Czechoslovakia.

President Vaclav Havel has dreams for his Czech Republic. They are dreams he wants the West to share

Article Abstract:

Vaclav Havel spent much of his adult life as a dissident writer, criticising those in authority. He has now taken on authority himself as president of the Czech Republic, and is still adjusting to this role after several years. He regards politics as morality in practice, and believes that all politicians should follow their consciences. He believes that the Czech Republic is now moving in the right direction, with moves being made towards establishing democracy and a market economy.
