Curious case of the high-flying Tory treasurer and the sinking ships

Article Abstract:

A company owned by Conservative party Treasurer Michael Ashcroft, the 24th-richest man in the UK, has operational control of and a 50% stake in the Belize shipping register. This means that Ashcroft controls the 'flag of convenience' of Belize, which has one of the worst safety records in the world. Ashcroft, who is Belize's ambassador to the United Nations and keeps most of his wealth offshore, has attracted considerable controversy. Indeed, Conservative party leader William Hague is coming under pressure to dismiss him.

A weird relationship with the crooked press baron

Article Abstract:

The future of UK Paymaster General Geoffrey Robinson's career has come into question following revelations of links with Robert Maxwell. The two men clearly had a great deal in common, but Robinson has always denied any significant involvement with Maxwell. The most strange deal involving the two men involved a reverse takeover of Transfer Technology, a company formed by Robinson, in 1990, with Maxwell effectively absorbing this company into Central & Sheerwood for 5.5 million pounds sterling.

Secret report reveals council vote-rigging

Article Abstract:

A number of irregularities have been unveiled as a result of an investigation into the ruling Labour group on Hackney council in north-east London. It was found that election malpractices took place in 1994, leading to the election of three Conservatives, and that a group of Labour councillors was secretly determining policy and failing to consult other council members. The investigation's secret report indicates that political discipline collapsed almost completely.
