Day of reckoning near after 15 years

Article Abstract:

Former South Korean president Chun Doo Hwan, who seized power in Dec 1979, sent the Special Warfare Command in response to rioting by students in the regional capital city of Kwangju in May 1980. This led to 10 days of killings, leaving a death toll possibly as high as 2,000. Very little was known about the massacre, even inside South Korea itself, but this is set to change as preparations are made to bring those involved in the murders to justice. The trial is scheduled to take place in 1996, and there is extensive public support for this move.

Japan tells Hashimoto he must go

Article Abstract:

The Liberal Democratic Party of Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto has performed very badly in elections to the upper house of the country's Diet. This has created political chaos, and is expected to prompt Hashimoto's resignation. The election defeat follows a decline in Hashimoto's authority within his own party and in his national popularity. A power struggle is likely to emerge as other party leaders and allies also resign.

Sino-American squabbles to be eased by visits

Article Abstract:

Latest moves to improve relations between the US and China will include visits by presidents Jiang Zemin and Bill Clinton to each other's countries. They are scheduled to undertake these visits in 1997 and 1998, but no details have yet been confirmed. Relations between the two countries have been clouded over recent years by conflict over issues including human rights and international trade.
