Decay and degradation

Article Abstract:

Making compost does not necessarily need to be a complex, time-consuming process. It is possible to make a compost heap anywhere, simply by piling waste such as vegetable peelings and grass cuttings into a heap. For those with a small garden, it is probably best to use some form of plastic container, possibly made from recycled pallets. Air and water are required to break down waste into compost, but sunshine is not necessary. An effective compost heap should be at least 3ft long and 3ft wide.

The Newton Goldings' problem? Their garden is concrete

Article Abstract:

Dealing with a large area of solid concrete in a garden can present a number of difficulties. Concrete which is in poor condition can probably be broken up, but well-laid concrete cannot be treated in this way. It may be worth considering hiring specialised equipment to remove the concrete. If this approach is not favoured, then it may be possible to drill holes in it, remove the hardcore and plant fruit trees.

Schwarzkopf and the Bronze Baby

Article Abstract:

Aeoniums are more rewarding to grow than petunias. They are glossy and succulent, but not hardy. They must be kept indoors during the winter. Succulents thrive in pots and like semi-arid soil, but need a fast-draining compost to avoid foot rot. They have interesting shapes and textures. Agaves are more spiky and symmetrical and combine well with other exotic-looking plants.
